IUKF Master nominated to International Martial Arts Hall of Fame

On Saturday 24th June 2023 I attended the International Martial Arts Hall of fame (London), My nomination was from Sensei Sid Werthan and I was pleased to receive confirmation of this prestigious award, the event was held in Kensington London at the Tara Copthorne Hotel, the day consisted of 4 hours seminars by selected  awardees, it was an excellent opportunity to swap ideas and variations on techniques that we may not have considered, martial arts represented included Karate, MMA, Wing Chun, Systema, Krav Maga and Kavanah.

My seminar looked at some of the Yakusoku kumite and how the use of Pin, Trap and utilisation of primary and secondary balance points, feedback was excellent, and this led to a number of clubs asking me to visit dojo’s to expand more. Once the seminars had finished there was a short break and, in the evening the Black tie event commenced, I was lucky enough to be presented and award for excellence in martial arts which was very much appreciated and was a in part a recognition of my 55 years of studying the martial arts.

The event was hosted by GM Gary Wasniewski and all monies raised on the night were donated to Cancer research a charity very close to my heart. Most importantly to me was the opportunity to make new friends and create opportunities to show Uechi Ryu to a wider audience. Notable award winners this year include Master Samuel Kwok, GM Neal Farber and Chuck Norris.

IUKF President visits Sitka, Alaska

IUKF President, Darin Yee, arrived in Sitka on the 11th and left for home in the 16th. While in Sitka, he worked with members of the Sitka Alaska Uechi-Ryu Karate Club both in person and online. Duane Swanson Sensei is the dojo owner there and he was the host for Yee Sensei.

They tested Stacy Smith online for Sandan. The online test was attended by IUKF members from all around the world. Darin Sensei attended and lead a session with the other karate club it Sitka also, the Kenwa Karate Club.

After Karate trainning they were enjoying fishing with captain Lloyd Swanson, and Darin fulfilled one of his dreams… To catch a fish! Also they had a great time playing many games like pool, cribbage, and a performance of axe throwing.

In the top of a mountain, Darin performed Kanchin and Sanseryu.

Unsung Uechi-ryu Hero

While I was president of IUKF, (International Uechi-ryu Karate Federation) I did most of the work involved with running the organization. . . And believe me, there was a great deal of work required on a daily basis. . . And when I felt that it was time to turn over the reins to someone, both qualified in business areas, but more importantly qualified in the more important areas consisting of:

  1. 100 % deserving of his/her master ranking.
  2. Still very much active in teaching.
  3. Responsible for teaching thousands of capable students and many who were motivated by this individual to carry on as Uechi-ryu teachers.
  4. Respected by all, as a human being and as a martial artist.
  5. Open-minded in all matters, relating to Uechi-ryu specifically and martial arts generally.
  6. In excellent physical/mental condition, able to confront the political conflicts and the mental/emotional confrontations this position encounters on a daily basis.
  7. Imaginative, creative and a “doer”. . . someone capable of accomplishing those tasks and projects needed to be upgraded.
  8. Someone, capable in all these challenging accomplishments, able and willing to devote a great deal of his daily life to the job.

And anyone reading this list will by now understand why I selected Grand Master Darin Yee for the position and after several years in this position, know how pleased I remain over that momentous decision.

There were many individuals who filled some of the above slots, but very few who filled them all. GM Darin Yee, who not only was qualified in my requirements, but also shared a love for a mutual hobby. . . Golf!

And it is on the golf course, where we talk about IUKF and discuss the purposes and goals of a martial art organization and structural changes needed for the future.

My sincere thanks to GM Yee for all his work and time spent building an organization for dojo owners and their students that will live on forever.

Sincerely,

George E. Mattson
