IUKF Code of Conduct
Purpose: To ensure that all members of the International Karate Federation are fully aware of their individual responsibilities and to offer guidance in assisting members to uphold integrity within their dojo, organization, and community.
As a martial artist, my primary obligation is to cultivate myself physically, mentally, and spiritually; to maintain my body in excellent condition; to sustain a strong and virtuous mind; and to dedicate my spirit to the venerable principles of the warrior spirit.
I shall uphold my martial arts training to the highest standard as a model for all; demonstrate courage when confronting adversity, threats, or harm; cultivate self-control; and remain continually attentive to the well-being of others. I will exhibit integrity in my decisions, actions, and conduct, and serve as an exemplary adherent to the rules and regulations of my association.
I possess a duty to others as a practitioner and instructor of martial arts. I shall transmit my professional teachings without bias from personal sentiments, prejudices, or hostilities. I will treat all individuals with the appropriate respect and shall refrain from acting officiously or in a predatory manner. My professional judgments will be well-founded and objective, free of personal motives, biases, or emotions. I will uphold the integrity of my teachings and those of my precursors, acknowledging that I am a beneficiary of an esteemed and honorable lineage. I shall exemplify the highest ideals of martial arts and shall never resort to unnecessary force or violence against any individual.
I acknowledge my rank as a symbol of my dedication to my chosen discipline, and I accept it as a responsibility to myself and others to uphold it as long as I remain faithful to the ethics of martial arts. I will continually endeavor to attain these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself to this noble lifelong pursuit for as long as I am able.
PRINCIPLES OF PRACTICE (Uechi Kanei, President, Uechi-ryu Karate-do Association 1984)
The purpose of karate training is to discipline the mind and body and to master the art of self-defense. A karate practitioner should be well-mannered and modest, value courtesy, always wear decent clothing, pay attention to speech and actions, and train diligently day and night. A karate practitioner must never rely on strength in a quarrel, speak harshly, act roughly, or be troublesome to others. A karate practitioner must never bring shame upon himself or his school in speech or action. A karate practitioner must never speak arrogantly, lapse into laziness, or act conceitedly. He should endeavor to train diligently and pursue self-improvement. A karate practitioner should respect decorum and the martial arts, uphold the fine traditions of karate, and contribute to society.
